Summary Cubes
Purpose: To provide a structure for summarising factual information or retelling key points of a story
Text: Narrative, informational
Use: Before, During and After reading.
1. Teachers need to explain and demonstrate Summary Cubes.
2. Explain the idea of cubing to students.
3. Demonstrate through read-aloud and think-aloud process of determining ideas about either narrative or informational text to write on the cube.
4. Guide students to work with partners to read text and Summary cubes.
5. Students can create their own cubes as follow-ups to reading narrative and information texts.

There are different options you can use for the sides of the die, for narrative and informational texts.

Side 1 - Title: Mama Played Baseball
Side 2- Characters: Mama, Amy, Grandpa, Grandma, Father
Side 3 - Setting: During World War ll
Side 4 - Problem: Mama needs a job while her husband fights in the war.
Side 5 - Solution: She gets a job playing baseball.
Side 6 - Theme: Reaching for your dreams.
